Every weekday, I travel on the same bus at the same time. Nothing unusual in that.
An older man gets on at the stop after me. Again, nothing unusual about that.
What is unusual happens when we pass the local Jobcentre Plus office.
If the man is on the right hand side of the bus, he will give the Jobcentre an one-fingered salute (or in the American patois flip them the bird). If he is on the left hand side of the bus, he merely shakes his fist at them.
I always smile at this impotent sign of defiance.
I can’t help wonder why he does this? Is he angry at the staff of the Jobcentre or is he angry with the people who sign on the Dole? Not a question I would ask of him but still…
People are strange. I should know. I am a person.
